Around the holidays, I was trying to figure out what would be a meanful gift I can give to my family and friends without spending too much money and save on time. As a DIY Educator and a huge chapstick fan, I thought to myself, I can just make my own chapstick. Luckly I was able to found a DIY Chapstick with five easy steps.
All you need is these Simple Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons shea butter or cocoa butter (or blend of both)
- 2 tablespoon virgin coconut oil
- 3 tablespoons beeswax, pastilles or shredded
- I recommend using a 1 tsp pure vanilla extract or peppermint extract. I tried to use the frozen dried strawberries but after a few weeks, they became to mold. So just stick to the vanilla or peppermint extract. At least you know what you are putting on your lips.
- Vitamin E oil
Step #1 Mix the cocoa butter, beeswax, vanilla extract and coconut oil into a glass bowl.
Step #2 Place all ingredients into a saucepan with 1/2 of cup of water with the glass bowl inside the saucepan over warm over medium-low heat. Leave to melt (this will take about 20 minutes). Stir occasionally.
Please note, the reason for the red color is because I use dried frozen strawberries which within a few weeks turned to molded. I would hightly recommend just using vanilla and peppermint extract or your favorite essential oil.
Once the cocoa butter, beeswax, and coconut oil have melted, turn off the heat and allow to cool for a few minutes. Remove the saucepan away from the hot surface. Add about 6 drops to the glass bowl.
PLEASE be very careful! You are handling HOT oil. Do not leave any of the pots or other items with the hot ingredients near the edge of counters or stoves.
Step #3 Also be sure to work on a stable surface.
Leave lip balm to cool on the counter for a few mintues. The chapstick mix will began to turn from liquid to solid. If this happens, it is totally fine! 🙂
Step #4 Use your fingers, spoon, toothpick to put the chapstick mix in small tubes. I ordered my chapstick tubes from Amazon.
